On May 1st RBTV attended the Chicagoland Television Educators Council (CTEC) Video Festival and walked away with some hardware. Eight of their original programs won an award with the big award going to Sophomores George Suchy and Colton Arnold’s “Late Hour” taking 1st place in the talk show category. RBTV also had many 2nd place finishes including Sophomores Dan Pignato and Nick Anderson in the Training Category with the cooking show “Cook This” and Senior Bryan Smaller in the Movie Trailer category “Rewind”.
RBTV also did well in the PSA category. Senior Jette Pleasant took 2nd with “Breathe”, Smaller and Senior Ryan Chodora took 3rd place, and Senior Max Weiss took 5th place. The Smaller and Senior Jackie Glosniak led RB 16 News also took 3rd place in the news program category.
Broadcast Journalism teacher Patty Sarkady was very pleased with RBTV’s success.
“We had stiff competition this year because more schools were competing. This is the best we’ve done since we started participating with the awards. We were very pleased with the results, but more importantly proud of the students,” Sarkady said.
Sarkady, who runs RB 16 News, was particularly proud of the news show.
“We (RB 16 News) haven’t placed since 2007, but we had a solid team this year. News is always the toughest category because we only submit one show where for other categories we had multiple shows in the running. We are really honored to place this year.” Sarkady said.
Besides for the CTEC Video Festival, RBTV, specifically Pleasant, also had success at the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences, Chicago/Midwest Chapter awards. She received two Crystal Pillar awards. One of the awards was in the Long Form category (nonfiction) for her documentary “Whisper of the Woods”. The other award was in the Writing category for the script of a different documentary “Adventures Abroad”.
This is the ninth award for Pleasant and her third Crystal Pillar. Although she has also won several CTEC awards, the Crystal Pillars are more meaningful.
“Crystal Pillars are the biggest television awards there are at the high school level, so it was a big honor to win two in one year,” Pleasant said.
Pleasant is also proud to have won awards for both her documentary itself as well as her writing.
“It was amazing to be awarded in both categories because they represent very different areas of TV.” she said.
With eight different shows winning awards, this is the most successful year for RBTV ever at the CTEC Video Festival. With two first place awards at the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences, Chicago/Midwest Chapter awards, this is the most successful they have ever been.
Play N’ trade: Good Games, Great Times

“Play N’ Trade” is a unique video game store that opened a few months ago but hasn’t gathered the interest and popularity it deserves. The Hodgkin located store is one of only sixteen in Illinois. The store’s focus is on everything video game related.
The store sells videogames, game systems, and accessories. But what sets it apart from other video game stores is it’s collection of used and “retro” games.
“We buy back old and used games from customers. The amount of money we give them depends on the rarity, popularity, and condition of the games,” Dan Yelen, an employee at “Play N’ Trade” said. “We don’t take old sports games anymore because there is no market for them. But we will want old games that are really good and rare.”
All the used games are marked down in price compared to brand new games, and you can get 10% off for being a member. Membership is $10 yearly and gives you opportunities like getting a certain percentage off certain items in the store.
But its Play N’ Trade’s impressive gallery of “retro” material that will really speak to old school gamers. They have old systems for sale that include the original ancient Nintendo to newly made “retro” systems like a system that plays super Nintendo and Sega Genesis games on the same system. They also have the standards of “retro” gaming including Nintendo 64s, Playstations and Playstation 2’s, original Xboxes, and all the different kinds of Segas. And with shelves full of games for all these old school systems, you’re bound to rediscover some timeless classics.
“It’s nice for people who didn’t have these games as kids or people who want to relive games they loved. Some of the best games came out for these retro systems,” Yelen said.
But “Play N’ Trade” isn’t just unique because of its vast collection of old and new video games, they also offer one of a kind disc repairs.
“It’s nice because a lot of people’s favorite games could be too scratched to play.” Yelen said.
Along with disc repair, they also repair broken systems including Xbox 360’s “Red ring of death,” a hardware or internal error that causes the Xbox 360 power button to flash red lights instead of the normal green light when powered on. When this happens the system will crash and not power on or function. This famous incident has claimed most original Xbox 360s.
Another unique feature at “Play N’ Trade” is that the customers are given the option of trying out videogames before they purchase them. They have systems set up in a part of the store called the “Player’s Club” where you can play games or compete in bi-weekly tournaments.
“Some stores don’t even have a description of the game, so (customers) could end up buying a game they don’t want. But at ‘Play N’ Trade’ that wont happen.” Yelen said.
“Play N’ Trade” is a truly unique store that I’d recommend to anyone who invests in videogames in any way. Whether you’re looking for a new or used game or even a game from twenty years ago. there’s no better place to look.
Wrestlers finish with solid season

The 2009-2010 Wrestling season has come to a close, but not before experiencing a huge amount of success. RB wrestlers finished with a dual meet record of 11-4 and completely dominated their conference with a record of 4-0.
One of the high points of the season was when the team beat powerhouse Fenton for the first time in seven years. Fenton has been the conference champions for the last seven years, but RB was able to pick up a victory against them in the end.
They finished in the top 3 as a team in three separate tournaments including 3rd against Mundelein, 2nd against Lisle, and 3rd in the Regionals.
Head Coach Jason Rech feels that the season as a whole went very well this year.
“This season was highly successful for the team and individuals. We won the conference for the first time in 7 years, so that was a big goal achieved by our team. We are young in many spots and I think our young wrestlers learned a great deal from their experiences” Rech said.
Besides their 3rd place finish as a team in Regionals, individual wreslters were also able to earn a lot of points and recognition. A total of six wrestlers qualified for Sectionals.
Sophomore Mike Abbatacola finished with a 27-7 record and placed fourth in Sectionals in the 103 pound weight class.
Junior Keegan Buttimer finished with a 21-15 record and placed fourth in Sectionals in the 112 pound weight class.
Junior Eduardo Orihuela finished with a 21-13 record and placed fourth in Sectionals in the 125 pound weight class.
Senior Chris Russell finished with a 27-11 record and placed fourth in Sectionals in the 140 pound weight class.
Senior Juan Gomez Velez finished with a 27-7 record and placed fourth in Sectionals in the 189 pound weight class.
But the biggest accomplishment was Junior John Schraidt, who finished with a 27-8 record, placed second in Sectionals, and qualified for State in the 285 pound weight class. This represents the end of a very successful season for the talented junior.
“John is a tireless worker and since the end of last year he has worked for everything he has achieved,” commented Rech.
“I was upset with my performance at State, but it was great to make it. The Semi-Final match was the biggest match of the year and I won 8-3 qualifying for state so I was really happy with that.” Schraidt added.
With another season in the books, Rech feels that next year holds a lot of opportunities for the team.
“We lose four senior starters and return 4 wrestlers who will be seniors and a solid group of underclassmen, so I feel like we can reload for next year and be even better.” said Rech.
Both Schraidt and Rech seem very confident about Schraidt’s chances to go back to State again next year.
“This year was good to get down there and get his feet wet, but next year’s goal is bring home the school’s first wrestling state championship in 28 years.” Rech said.
“I am really confident that I can go back to state. And I have a realistic goal of winning state.” Schraidt added.
REVIEW: Raditude (Weezer)
December 3, 2009 by sciannaa
On November 3, 2009 the Alternative Rock band Weezer released their seventh studio album “Raditude”. A follow up to their 2008 album “Weezer (The Red Album)”, “Raditude” follows Weezer’s usual style of Alternative Rock with some pop melodies thrown in. Lead singer Rivers Cuomo does all the lead vocals for “Raditude”, but he didn’t write every song on the album.
“Raditude” might be Weezer’s most complete album, as it has something for every Weezer fan. Whether you prefer more alternative Weezer songs (“My name is Jonas”, “Hash pipe”) or pop Weezer songs (“Buddy Holly”, “Keep Fishin”) this album has something for you. It’s their best album musically since their second album “Pinkerton” and the lyrics are more humble like in their debut album “Weezer (The Blue Album)” than the confident lyrics in their sixth album “Weezer (The Red Album)”. The issue with the album is it has only ten songs, but their biggest album was only 13 songs (“Maladroit”). The usual number for a Weezer album is ten so this album is like a standard Weezer album.
“Raditude” is full of solid songs, with really no weak songs. That’s not to say every track is a number one hit, but there’s more good than bad on this album.
1. “(If you’re wondering if I want you to) I Want You To”
- The first track on “Raditude” is also the first single for the album. It’s more of a pop song than alternative, but it’s really catchy. The lyrics are more shy which is more Weezer’s style.
2. “I’m your Daddy”
- The second track is also more of a pop song with hints of rock thrown in. The lyrics are the best part of the song, as they are very catchy and understandable. In this song he talks about meeting a girl at a bar and thinking he’s in love. It’s a different style of pop compared to “I want you to”, so having them back to back works really well.
3. “The Girl Got Hot”
-The third track starts out with a very recognizable riff and Rivers saying “Woah oh oh oh” over and over. When you hear that first part you can easily picture it being in a commercial. I say that because I did see it in a commercial promoting the new season of Scrubs. It then goes into lyrics describing Rivers seeing someone he used to know many years later and she got hot. Along with talking about how he doesn’t have a chance with her and how her friends didn’t get hot this song took a few listens to really like. I liked the beginning right away, but after a couple times I came to appreciate the song as whole and it’s one of my favorite tracks on the album.
4. “Can’t Stop Partying”
- The fourth track is definitely going to be the big hit of the album. It’s not my personal favorite song on the album, but it’s got the recipe to be a hit. It was originally an acoustic song on River’s second solo album “Alone II: The Home Recordings of Rivers Cuomo”, but for the album they sped it up and added more dance like music. The biggest draw for the song is that Lil Wayne contributed a verse. I’m not a huge Lil Wayne fan, but I really like his contributions to “Cant Stop Partying”. It takes the song from good to great. And besides that Rivers has great lyrics about his love to party. Some Weezer fans will prefer the acoustic version on River’s solo album, which I think is very good as well.
5. “Put Me Back Together”
- Following one of the biggest songs on the album is tough. But to me, “Put Me Back Together” not only one ups “Cant Stop Partying”, but it’s also the best track on the album. It features a vulnerable Rivers singing about getting dumped. He’s clearly not over it, and says when he falls down she puts him back together. I really enjoy this song because it follows Weezer’s usual vulnerable lyrics and has a catchy hook which is the highlight of the song. It’s probably not my favorite Weezer song of all time, but it is definitely my favorite song on the album.
6. “Trippin’ down the Freeway”
- After “Put me Back Together” is “Trippin down the freeway” which features a similar formula to “I’m your Daddy”, with catchy lyrics and a fun chorus. It’s a good song, but it doesn’t stick out as much as the last two tracks. It also features a fun guitar solo.
7. “Love is the Answer”
- The seventh track on the album is clearly the most unusual. It features Indian drums and hindu style music that transitions into a very catchy and memorable chorus. The song also features a verse solely in Hindu. The chorus is enough to make this a solid track.
8. “Let it All Hang Out”
- The eighth track on the album is the hardest rocking song on the album by far. It’s got a lot of heavy guitar with a catchy chorus to go with it. The lyrics talk about a Friday evening where he is so tired from the week he’s just going to meet up with his friends and let it all hang out. The heavy guitar sets the tone where “In the Mall” picks up.
9. “In the Mall”
- The ninth track on the album is also the only song on the album not written by Rivers Cuomo. Drummer Patrick Wilson wrote this one, and although it’s a good song and the strongest musically on the album, it’s overall my least favorite song on the album. It has simple lyrics talking about roaming around in the mall with a very strong drum part and the best guitar solo on the album (discluding the bonus tracks on the deluxe version). This song is fun to listen to if you enjoy Weezer’s harder rocking songs (“Undone: The Sweater Song”, most of the album “Pinkerton”), but it doesn’t have a lasting appeal to me.
10. “I Don’t Want to Let you Go”
- The closer of the album is another song that originally appeared on River’s second solo album. It’s the softest song on the albumand follows the two loudest songs on the album. It’s very simple and to the point and kind of relates back to “Put me Back Together” because it’s about not wanting to let the girl go after they broke up. Vocals are the main focus of the song, as there’s not much going on in the background. I think it’s a perfect way to close the album, because it’s very relaxing and kind of soothes into the end.
Overall “Raditude” is a great album especially for Weezer fans. I’ve listened through it many times and even though I’m a huge Weezer fan, I think non-Weezer fans could really enjoy this album if given a chance.

Wrestling expecting success this year

Wrestling is about ready to pick up where they left off after a very successful season last year. Although many of the state qualifiers have graduated, there are still a handful of wrestlers who have a chance to make this year a successful one.
Of the four state qualifiers last year, only Chris Russel returns this year. Seven of the sectional qualifiers (Sophomore Sam Weiss, Juniors Keegan Buttimer, John Schraidt, Eduardo Orihuela, and Nick Rohm, and Seniors Juan Gomez and Alberto Cotto) are returning this year as well.
New head coach Jason Rech is very hopeful to continue the success built from last year. And he’s not worried about there being any changes now that former head coach Neil Dughetti is no longer there. He says that things will be very similar.
“Our philosophies are very similar, although I will focus more on conditioning. And we got a new room dedicated to wrestling this year which is a huge plus for us,” Rech said.
Senior John Schraidt thinks the team is very well rounded this year.
“I think it’s going to be a great year because we have good leaders from last year returning and newcomers to round out the team. I think we’re really solid.” said Schraidt.
Another big addition to the team this year is new assistant coach Bill Kucinski.
“He wrestled at the University of Iowa so we’re very excited about having him on the staff this year,” Rech said.
The first 2009-2010 Wrestling season started with the first practice on Monday November 9th.
First Beatles Rock Band DLC Arrives
October 26, 2009 by sciannaa
On October 20th and 22nd the first batch of downloadable content for The Beatles: Rock Band was released. The rest of the songs from the album “Abbey Road” that aren’t already in the game will be available for download.
Although Xbox 360 players have had “All You Need is Love” since the game came out on September 9, 2009, for Playstation 3 and Wii owners this is the first time any Beatle songs will be available for download. Harmonix (creators of Rock Band) and Microsoft (creators of Xbox 360) worked out a deal where “All You Need is Love” will be exclusive to Xbox 360 until the contract expires in December. So for Xbox 360 players this will be the second time that songs will be available for download.
“Abbey Road” was the final album recorded by The Beatles before they broke up. Although it was the second to last album released, it’s still considered by most fans to be the last album. After recording songs for an unfinished album named “Get Back” The Beatles were on each other’s last nerves. The recordings for the unfinished album didn’t go well so they abandoned the project and decided they wanted to end strong. So they went to the Abbey Road Studios where they usually recorded their albums to try to make a final album worthy of the greatness The Beatles put out before. The result was “Abbey Road”. Referred to as the masterpiece, this album did all that The Beatles hoped for and more.
“Abbey Road” had six songs originally featured on the disc: “Come Together”, “Something”, “Here Comes the Sun”, “I want you (She’s so Heavy)”, “Octopus’s Garden”, and “The End”; are all featured on the game. This means that “Maxwell’s Silver Hammer”, “Oh! Darling”, “Because,” “You Never Give Me Your Money”, “Sun King”, “Mean Mr. Mustard”, “Polythene Pam”, “She Came in Through the Bathroom Window”, “Golden Slumbers”, “Carry That Weight”, “Her Majesty” are being released for download.
“You Never Give Me Your Money” – “The End” are a series of unfinished songs blended together called “The Abbey Road Medley”. When using Playstation 3 or Xbox 360 you’re given the option to play all of the songs from “The Abbey Road Medley” as one continuous sixteen minute track if you buy the entire album.
When you don’t play the song as one continuous track, the medley songs are grouped together as when they were recorded. For example, “Sun King/Mean Mr. Mustard” is one continuous track on the game because it was recorded together as one continuous track. All the songs will take place in the Abbey Road Studios and evolve into a dreamscape, like the songs from the album already featured on the disc.
The biggest issue with the first batch of DLC has been the fact that the Abbey Road Medley, which was one of the huge draws for buying the full album, is only available for Xbox 360 and Playstation 3 players. If you play on Wii, you have to play the song separately and there’s a loading in between songs like any normal playlist. The only good thing for Wii owners is that all the tracks are available to buy individually, where Xbox 360 and Playstation 3 owners only have the option of buying “Maxwell’s Silver Hammer”, “Oh! Darling”, and “Because” as individual tracks. The only way for PS3 and 360 owners to get the songs from the Medley is to buy the full album.
“Abbey Road” is the first of three albums planned to be released by the end of the year. “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band” and “Rubber Soul” are being released in November and December respectively.
“Abbey Road” is out on Xbox 360 and Wii on October 20, 2009 and Playstation 3 October 22, 2009.
Best Buddies matching party a success
Best Buddies kicked off the 2009-2010 school year on Tuesday with their Matching Party. It took place in the faculty cafeteria from 6-8. Both the kids with special needs (and their parents) and the peer buddies attended the event to find out who exactly is their buddy this year.
The function began in the faculty cafeteria. Then the buddies went outside into the common area while the faculty sponsors talked to the parents about what the program is all about. The buddies participated in activities where everyone got to know all the peer buddies and vice versa.
They then began the process when pairs found out who their buddies were this year. All of the kids were given parts of an ice cream shaped piece of paper. It had a flavor and their name written on it as well. The kids with special needs then needed to match the flavor of ice cream with the peer buddy who had the same flavor ice cream. The whole process took around 40 minutes.
After that it was time to go back into the cafeteria and get to know the new buddies. They also made ice cream sundaes at a make it yourself sundae bar. It gave all the buddies time to get to know each other and bond.
“It was great,” said Vice President Kelly Sherman, “Everyone was ecstatic with their matches.”
The next Best Buddies event is the Halloween Party on October 25, 2009 from 5-7 P.M. in the Alumni Lounge.
Beatlemania back again

What happens when you take the most popular band in the world and one of the most popular video games in the world?
You get The Beatles: Rock Band. And it doesn’t disappoint.
Back in late 2006, Dhani Harrison, son of late Beatles Guitarist George Harrison, suggested to MTV President Van Toffler a Rock Band based on The Beatles.
At the time it seemed like an unlikely possibility, but Harrison took it a step further and went to Harmonix president Alex Rigopulos with the idea. He also went to Apple Corps (Beatles Company) and its shareholders Sir Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr, and Yoko Ono (wife of John Lennon). They agreed as long as the game contained songs that spanned the bands whole music career.
In February 2008 Harmonix showed Apple Corps a five song demo of the game. It was approved and the creative process took off.
With Apple Corps and Harmonix now creative partners, the game was able to get authentic with songs, venues, looks, facts, and all other information present in the game. Early on in the game it was decided that although it presents a musical and visual history of the band, the game does not attempt to show any of the turmoil that went on during the band’s history.
For example, on “Back in the U.S.S.R.” Starr is shown playing drums even though he had quit the band during the White Album and was not present during the recording. Eric Clapton, a friend of Harrison, was brought in to play lead guitar on “While my Guitar Gently Weeps” to ease tension in the band. But in the videogame, Harrison is playing guitar, not Clapton. It makes the game less complex because the same four guys are playing in every song, but for die-hard fans it could affect the authenticity of the game.
Giles Martin, son of legendary producer George Martin who produced almost every Beatles track, was hired to manipulate the music so it would work in a videogame. Along with separating tracks, Martin threw in never before heard chatter between the Beatles and George Martin before and after the song. The game even counts how many times you’ve restarted the song and will throw in one of the Beatles saying “Take 2” if it’s the second time in a row you’ve tried the song.
Harmonix also tried to make the chart (the notes) as realistic as possible. This became a challenge as there are only five buttons on the guitar and there’s tons of possible notes on a real guitar. They decided to try to replicate the movement and finger positions during the song. With drums, they tried to match every single drum beat on the song at Expert difficulty. This makes some drum parts challenging as Starr had unusual drums habits like innovative fills on songs like “Hello Goodbye” and “Helter Skelter.”
The game features historic Beatles’ venues, including “The Ed Sullivan Show”, “The Cavern Club”, “Shea Stadium”, and the rooftop of the Apple Corps headquarters. The Beatles only played live until 1966 because of exhaustion and death threats to Lennon. So all songs that were recorded after 1966 (Sgt Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club-Let it Be) are represented by dreamscapes. With dreamscapes the band starts in the recording studio and then progresses into an unusual scene that represents the song in some sort of way. For example “Octopus’s Garden” takes place in an underwater reef.
The gameplay has a few major changes. The biggest change is vocal harmony. The game can have as many as three microphones hooked up at once. When more than one person sings, the other can sing vocal harmony. There are three lines on the vocal chart, one blue in the middle, one brown, and one orange. The blue is the lead and the brown and orange lines are the first and second harmony.
Another difference is the change of the name of overdrive to Beatlemania. It does the same thing, but with a more Beatles related name. When you activate Beatlemania the chart changes to a translucent yellowish color which could make the notes difficult to see for some players although I had no issue with it.
The game designers also dropped the freestyle fills sections for drums. Instead you play normal and then hit the green pad to activate Beatlemania when prompted. Audio feedback, like how well the band is doing, the band singing along, or booing if the band failed were dropped to preserve the Beatle’s music.
I was really looking forward to this game. I’m a huge Beatles fan and a huge fan of Rock Band. It seemed clear to me that I was going to enjoy this game. But even for rock band fans, this game is great. If you hate the Beatles, this game isn’t going to change your mind. But if you’re unsure or kind of like them, this game is going to blow you away.
The soundtrack doesn’t contain all their hits (No “Hey Jude”, “Let it Be”, or “Across the Universe”) but it does have a majority. Players will gain a lot of respect for them as musicians. Some of the songs are challenging. Revolution for guitar, Get Back or Good Morning Good Morning on drums, I Saw Her Standing There and Helter Skelter on bass, and tons of songs on vocals. With that said, the game is easy compared to other Rock Band games. But that’s because its not over charted, its an accurate display on what the songs were like to play.
Game designers have plans for a lot of Downloadable Content. “All you need is Love” was released as an Xbox 360 exclusive the same day the game came out. The proceeds went to the “Doctors without Borders” charity. The song is exclusive to Xbox until December and will then be released on the other two consoles. On October 20th the rest of the album “Abbey Road” is going to be released on all consoles. In November the rest of the album “Sgt Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band” is going to be released. The final album they’ve announced they’re going to release is Rubber Soul in December.
The game overall is fantastic. I love the vocal harmony, the song selection (for the most part), the visuals, the story mode, game play. It’s almost perfect. My only issues are that it only has 45 songs, considerably shorter than most music games, and the game isn’t incredibly challenging. Another issue is that if you get the limited edition bundle, which comes with a Hofner bass controller (Paul’s bass of choice), a Beatles rock band themed drum set with an attachable Beatles kick pad, the game, a microphone, a microphone stand, and Beatles related postcards, it can be considerably expensive for the casual fan. For me it was a no brainer even if it emptied my wallet. To some people the price is not worth it and they would prefer just to buy the game and use their old rock band instruments. While that’s great it doesn’t give you the full experience of the game and the microphone stand really makes the game more fun as it gives you the opportunity to play an instrument and sing at the same time. Although they’ve only announced three albums, there are plans to release tons of songs as DLC.
All in all this game can be an incredible experience for non Beatles fan, but definitely will be a prized possession for die hard Beatles fans. And when the DLC comes out, it’s like a new game. This is the game that could change the way music rhythm games are made, and the fact that the Beatles are the ones to make this innovative of a game just makes sense. I give it 9.5/10.

“Put Me Back Together” Weezer
