All fall sports have concluded, but before we move on to winter sports at Riverside-Brookfield, the Metro Suburban Conference had to hand out some hardware. 21 student-athletes in eight different sports were given the All-Conference title.
Three girls’ tennis players made all conference. Becky Pendola made All-Conference for her play in singles and Joanna Keen and Madison Powers for doubles.
Both boys’ and girls’ cross country teams had runners that made the Metro Suburban squad. Keegan Buttimer was the lone boy on varsity to make the cut and Ken Sprague made it for Frosh/Soph. Maggie McLaughlin and Jacki Grisafe were the girls to get the honor.
The boys’ golf team had two members given the honor. Junior Jack Kemper and senior Kris Strnad were all-conference after the team made it to sectionals.
The 19-17 girls’ volleyball team had two girls make All-Conference. These girls were senior Kelsey Egger and junior Elena Duve.
Though the football team did not make the playoffs, they still had the most All-Metro Suburban members of any sport at Riverside-Brookfield. Seven players were given the honor. Three All-Conference juniors were Nick Callahan, Blake Beck, and Alex Huffhines. The four seniors were Tyler Radek, Watoris Slater, John Schraidt, and Zach Sollinger.
Lastly, the boys’ soccer team had three All-Conference members. Ruben Chavez was the Offensive MVP of the MSC, and seniors Alex Amaya and TJ Armic were named to the conference team.
Keep on running
Seven students from RB had the chance to run in sectionals on Saturday, October 31, but only Sam Oberholtzer made the qualifications for state. The top five teams are the only one’s who can go to state, along with the top five individuals not on those teams. Oberholtzer came in the third place, allowing her to race on November 7th in Peoria, Illinois.
Oberholtzer ran in Detweiller Park and her coach expected great things from her. Coach Whitney Carlson said that “Sam is a tough competitor. I expect her to be in the top 50 or even top 25 (all state).”
Last year the team came in third place; they also made it to state. This year they struggled with injury, sickness, etc. Carlson states that, “Although we have a talented team, it just wasn’t our day.”
The other members of the team who competed were: Sam (3rd place) and Sydney (mid-late 20’s) Oberholtzer, Anna Tess (35-36), Maggie McLaughlin, Kelly Glavin (80’s), Gabby Ulloa (60’s), and Rachel Powell.
Sophomore Maggie McLaughlin reports that sectionals were “very disappointing, we were expecting to go to state, but we didn’t run our best. I feel really sad, but proud of Sam and the boys.”
On Saturday November 7, Oberholtzer proved her coach correct and placed 51st in state finishing with a time of early-mid nineteen minutes. She had a phenomenal performance and ran her best. She was supported by her fellow teammates and made RB proud.
Girls Cross Country – The race for state
This year the girls cross country team is determined to make it to state once again. The runners plan on giving it their all at the upcoming conference meet on Saturday, October 17th and in hopes of going all the way to state.
The runners “Can’t wait to get back to state” says Senior Sam Oberholtzer. The team has formed a very strong bond because they run every day after school and see each other on the weekends for meets. The girls really need to be there for one another especially around this time when they need to start pushing each other to get to state. They don’t mind though because they are a “Big family” says Senior Sydney Oberholtzer.
Winning conference is the team’s first big step to going to state. They need to keep up their pace by winning regional’s and then going to sectionals and finally making it to state. Last year the team made it to state, however despite great effort, they didn’t win.
This year they plan on winning their first state championship even though new teams have been added to the conference. Assistant coach Ms. Sterling has high hopes of beating Illiana Christian and Lemont.
Their chances this year remain high going into conference. Hopefully the family atmosphere will help them to push each other to the top.
