Bulldogs bounce back on track
December 23, 2009
After following last year’s seniors who were able to post a remarkable record of 28-3, it’s easy to say that the girl’s basketball team has big shoes to fill, but with the season already in full swing it seemed the girls had gotten off on the right foot.
Over Thanksgiving break the girls were able to win the Bill Vandemerkt tournament beating schools; Gordon Tech, Morton, and cross town rival Nazareth in the closing seconds of the game. Scoring the game winning basket was point guard, and team captain Jessie Hutchens.
“We really played like a team and were able to beat good competition for the championship,” said Hutchens.
The next game opened up conference play, and the game which tended to be in the bulldogs’ favor in the past, sadly became upset city. The Fenton Bison were able to hand the girls their first loss of the season, 60-48.
“It caught us by surprise” said Hutchens. “I think it might have helped us out in a way. Now we know we can’t take anyone for granted in conference.”
She may have been right too, with the girls right back on pace. The next to conference games were all Bulldogs, beating Elmwood Park, 58-36 and newcomer team Timothy Christian, 62-52.
Now with the current record at 5-1, it may be easy for someone to jump to the idea of another record breaking season, but Hutchens isn’t taking any chances.
“We’re not worried about the record, were going to take this season one game at a time from here on out.”
