As the girls’ basketball season comes to a close, they end yet another successful year under head coach Dallas Till. The team, currently on a 14 game win streak, sits at 25-3 on the year.
Expectations were high coming into this year, and the team certainly did not disappoint. Senior Sarah Jnobaptiste and junior Brenna Loftus have been huge towards the success of the team, helping them achieve their main goal: winning conference.
“Our biggest goal going into the season was to win conference, and that’s something we were expected to do too I think, mainly because we won last year. That was the general goal,” Loftus said.
Although expectations were high, there were some questions. After losing key seniors last year, the team had a JV group that filled the spots that were left empty. Although young, everyone is willing to do what is needed to support this year’s team.
Though there have not been many struggles as the season has gone on, the team has reminded each other not to panic, to remain calm, shake it off, and move on to the next play.
Along with that comes great chemistry, and this year’s team has that: building relationships both on and off the court, not getting caught up in any personal issues that may arise, and not worrying about stats. Getting closer each day as the season goes on, the team knows a lot about each other and knows how they work best.
“That’s our best feature. It’s a big reason we are successful so far, it’s all about the team. It’s never about an individual. People aren’t worried about whether they score a certain amount of points. This team really enjoys each other. It translated into success for us,” Till said.
Each game this year has had the same approach: a must-win, regardless of the opponent. Although some games may be more important than others, every game is approached with importance. Even though the offense may not change game to game, assistant coach Ruge and Till make scouting reports each game.
“For each game Coach Till and Coach Ruge have a scouting report ready for us so that we know how to defend certain players, but we always approach offense the same,” Jnobaptiste said.
Now that the season is coming to a close, the team feels they have overachieved from what people thought they would do, surprising people who may have had doubts about the team after losing a big group of seniors. Adjusting well and going into each day with an incredible work ethic, the team was able to come out more powerful than some may have expected.
“I’d say this team is overachieving in comparison to how people thought we would perform,” Loftus said. “That’s not to say people assumed we’d do poorly, but I think we’ve surprised people in how well we’ve done.”
