Super Smash Bros., the dream lineup

Who should be included in the new game release?

April 8, 2014

Have you ever imagined a video game that consists of thirty different characters from several different video games in one action packed brawl? Well, your dreams have already been made true! Nintendo has previously released the Super Smash Bros. series which features popular game characters such as Mario, Pikachu, and Link from the Legend of Zelda (not to mention characters from Sonic, Metroid, Kirby, etc).

For a quick background to those who are oblivious to the series, it began back in 1999 when the first game, titled Super Smash Bros., was released for the Nintendo 64. The sequel, Super Smash Bros. Melee, was released for the Gamecube back in 2001, and in 2008 Super Smash Bros. Brawl was released for Wii.

Now, the game will be re-released under its original name sometime this year for the WiiU and the 3DS.

Here, Clarion staffers share their opinions on which famous video game characters should return to the series and which should be added.

Kiera’s Picks

If you know who I am you’ll know one of my favorite games of all time is Pokémon. If you’ve ever played SSB Brawl with me you’d know that one of my prefered characters is the Pokémon Trainer. His team is Squirtle, a water type, Ivysaur, a grass type, and Charizard, a fire type. Perfect, right?

Then why hasn’t he been confirmed yet? He is Red for goodness sake! Red is the ultimate Pokemon Master, the champion. He’s the first character you ever play as in the video games. Plus, being able to switch between three of everyone’s favorite Pokemon is living the dream. You can either use Water Gun with Squirtle to get those far away targets, Bullet Seed via Ivysaur for those people who think jumping to avoid attacks is smart, and for those who like to get up close and personal a little of Charizard’s Rock Smash will get the job done.

Now who is left to take down the mighty Red other than his biggest rival Blue. Blue is the complete opposite of Red, arrogant, egotistical, and unfriendly overall. Though a great trainer he seems to think that being the grandson of Professor Oak will get him places. His three main team members would consist of Blastoise, Umbreon, and Arcanine. Though there would be the removal of a grass type it’d be cool to see something other than the usual three in the three Pokemon party. They’d have a ton of variations of the attacks used in the games and anime. Blastoise could Hydro Pump someone off the edge of the arena, Arcanine could Fire Blast a close target and Umbreon could hit you with a Hypnosis and attack with Night Slash.  The final smash could be different depending on the Pokemon, or like Red’s final smash could be a combined beam of each Pokemon’s attack.

Well, here’s my two picks. Like them or not I’m sticking with them!

Super Smash Bros. is a very complex game, and thus it has complex characters. That’s why my first choice would be Bowser Jr. from the Super Mario Bros. franchise. Seeing how the Koopa Kid has slowly grown into a very important character, I wouldn’t be surprised if he was introduced into the game. He could have a variety of attacks, involving the many items he uses throughout other games. For example, he could use the paintbrush from Mario Sunshine as a weapon, and use it to create sticky surfaces that players would get trapped on. Putting on his bandana over his face, he could turn into Shadow Mario for a short period of time, giving him very high speed and agility. A final smash could involve some kind of airship or the clown blimp he uses in other games, with boxing gloves, punching everyone off of the stage. The many abilities Bowser Jr. could have will add to the tactics and change the gameplay greatly.

My second choice would shockingly have to be Cooking Mama. Considering that they put the Villager from Animal Crossing in the game, there’s no limits as to what else they could put. Just imagine getting hit on the head with a pan, or having pies thrown at other players to stun them. There’s so many other games with Cooking Mama in them, the range of different moves and features would be enormous. When the final smash is activated, you’ll hear Cooking Mama say “Don’t worry, Mama will fix it!”, and has her eyes glow with flames, she sucks everyone into a cooking pot, and tosses it over the side of the arena. Her combination of speed and use of kitchen appliances could prove deadly, indeed.

When it comes to Super Smash Bros, I like to play on the offense. That’s why my first choice would be Simon Belmont from Castlevania.  Think about it, Simon Belmont would be awesome in Smash Bros. Is he a third party character? Yeah, but so what? They can have Solid Snake, or Sonic in their game, but no Simon Belmont? The Castlevania games on the NES were amazing. I would like to see him use his whip like he does in the Castlevania games he appears in, but it would also be cool to see him use Holy Water to freeze enemies for a short period of time, and he could throw Axes when attacking enemies in the air, and using knives for enemies on land. The only thing that would be challenging, would be his final smash. I’m not sure what they could use for it, but the people who work on Smash Bros are creative, so they’ll come up with something.

Now, I noticed that my favorite character of all time hasn’t returned yet. That character is the almighty, amazing, and super duper awesome Dr. Mario. Yes, I would like to see the greatest character in Smash Bros make a triumphant return in the upcoming game. Why Dr. Mario? Why not just play as Mario? Well, in Melee, Dr. Mario was basically an amped up better version of Mario. The only downside of Dr. Mario was that he was slower than regular Mario, but that’s cool, because he was stronger than mario. Also, Dr. Mario had style. For real, he threw megavitamins instead of the fireballs! Plus he looked like a Doctor! But just as Mario! How cool is that?! I would also like to see for his final smash, to be the three Red, Blue, and Yellow viruses to pop up on the screen, and attack his opponent, and then have Dr. Mario finish off his opponent with a giant megavitamin, to throw them off screen. That would be amazing.

I look for characters with power and strategy. The characters I think would be a great addition are Skullkid from Nintendo’s Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask and Mewtwo of Pokemon.

SkullKid would be an amazing character to be added in the game. He is slick, creepy, powerful and really rad! With Skullkid in the new game, I could defeat anyone who challenges me. His special move can be him sort of summoning Majora’s power through the mask into a sphere of power and energy like Samus, The Bounty Hunter from Nintendo’s Metroid series, does. His special combo moves can be variations from him being able to teleport, possibly summon little Puppets, and maybe even attacking with a lantern that sets his enemy aflame! He would be an amazing character with much skill to add to the game.

As for his final smash attack, he could have a devastating move. He could play the trumpet Skullkid is seen with in Twilight Princess, and with that the Moon could fall down in a big portion of the screen leaving players some chances to escape a deadly KO. Skullkid should be added because he fits into The Super Smash Bro’s theme of Nintendo and Zelda, he is really cool and cunning to most people that know of him, and he can have great variation in his style and moves. I think some variation could better help the Smash games and could possibly bring in more character ideas. With Skullkid some new map ideas can come too! Termina can be brought in with many ideas as to places, as well as fighting in the moon like the final areas of Majora’s Mask, and even the famous Lost Woods. If Skullkid is added to the new Smash game, he could smash things out of this world and onto the Moon!

Another character who I think has potential to make a comeback to the new game is the one and only, powerful Mewtwo! He can come back to the series and with him, I could be unstoppable again! Mewtwo was added into the Super Smash Bros series in the release of Super Smash bros Melee, possibly my all-time favorite game, and with him in the game, things were always interesting and fun. In the game, the moves he had and the strategy that could be made from them were astonishingly amazing. His special move was shooting a ball of energy from his palms, like in the Pokemon Movies he stars in, similar to some of the other characters I enjoy like Samus. He could charge it up and fire it at his opponent’s to blast them away! Another one of the moves he had was his ability to teleport very quickly in the direction of the players choice if mastered. I took on the task of mastering this move along with Mewtwo’s others and it was really cool and useful. With Mewtwo’s quick movements and powerful moves, he always made my Super Smash Bros experience fun and interesting. If he was brought into the new game and changed up a bit things would always be surprising for me and my foes! I could once again, take things to the second level!

So the four of us do have different views on returning and new characters. We so far know twenty four of the new lineup and hopefully our characters make the cut once the game is released. It’d be great to have such variety and get to experience new characters with new movesets and see who has the better skills to become the ultimate brawler.
