Teachers vote to approve new contract
Decision now rests with school board
December 16, 2013
This morning, the RBEA which is comprised of teachers and support staff voted to ratify a new contract. However, that doesn’t necessarily mean negotiations are over. The RBEA has now notified the administration of its decision, and it is now up to the school board to decide whether they would like to ratify the contract as well. The board has two special meetings set, one Monday and one Wednesday. After the board votes, if the contract is approved, they would then sign it into effect alongside the RBEA.
Teachers and staff received a physical copy of the tentative contract that has been the subject of ongoing discussions between representatives from the board and the RBEA last Thursday. Contracts were handed out during teachers’ weekly PLC meetings.
This morning, teachers met to discuss the contract and then voted during their lunches. If the majority had not voted yes, a new negotiating team would have had to go back to the school board to start again. This might also happen if the board chooses to vote no on the contract.
Specific details within the contract are not yet available to the public.
