Duke bests Butler to become NCAA champs

Butler’s real life “Hoosiers” story ended in the NCAA with their loss against Duke by just two points, with the final score being 61-59. Both teams fought long and hard through the entire game without either one of them leading by more than 6 points. Although the underdog team fell, this game will still go down in NCAA championship history.

This win by the Blue Devils will be Mike Krzyzewski’s fourth championship overall, but his first championship win since 2001. His team brought everything they could to the floor with Kyle Singler, Nolan Smith, Jon Scheyer, and Brian Zoubek bringing home the win. The big three Singler, Smith, and Scheyer scored 47 points throughout the entire game.

The Bulldogs also played to win with Gordon Hayward scoring 12 points, Shelvin Mack scoring 12, Matt Howard scoring 11 and, Jukes with 10.

In the final minutes of the game Howard put the pressure on when he scored putting Butler only behind Duke by 1 with the score being 60-59. Singler missed the shot on the other side with Butler taking the ball for their final shot by Hayward. Hayward missed the shot and Zoubek took the rebound. Zoubek was fouled and made the first shot and intentionally missed the second. Butler tried for one more attempt at a basket with 3 seconds left but fell short, ending the Butler 25 win streak.

Although Butler lost this year they’ll be sure to come back next year to try again, along with the expanded 96 teams to win the NCAA Championship.
