UConn womens hoops wins 80th straight
November 19, 2010
The Uconn Women’s basketball team was able to extend its historic win streak to 80 games last night in their second home game of the season. The #1 Huskies played the #2 Baylor Lady Bears led by sophomore phenom Brittney Griner. Even though Griner was able to rack up 19 points, 7 rebounds, 1 steal, and 9 blocks. Baylor would lose 64-65, in their second meeting in the last 6 months against Uconn.
The thing about Baylor is their superstar Brittney Griner; she is a 6’8” sophomore coming out Texas. She is one of the NCAA women’s basketball premiere players. She is basically one of the only threat to the powerhouse team UConn and their win streak.
However UConn is still the team to beat and has been for the past two seasons. Led by Coach Geno Auriemma, his last two seasons were perfect 39-0 and he was able to win the NCAA Final Four tournament both times. The success of that team was due in part to Maya Moore and Diana Taurasi.
UConn remains undefeated and got past their toughest game for a long time. During their 80 game win streak this was the closest game they were ever in. Coach Geno Auriemma stated at a later press conference that Uconn wasn’t as good as they were last year and have a lot to prove in this season. Expect good games from Uconn against top ten ranked teams: The Ohio State currently 7th and Stanford 3rd over the next month and a half.
