FCCLA takes on regionals
February 15, 2017
FCCLA is a student organization that helps young men and women become leaders and address important family, personal, work and societal issues through family and consumer sciences education. On Friday February 3rd, FCCLA had a regional competition at College of Dupage.
“This year, the competition took place at the College of DuPage. When we arrived, we each went to our given competitions, some of which included cake decorating, interior design, food innovations, and apparel construction.” said FCCLA member Stefani Gonzalez.
The regional FCCLA competition includes categories like cake and cookie decorating, apparel construction, interior design, and more. According to Gonzalez, it’s also a great chance to meet new people from other schools that share interests.
“While we were waiting to compete, we talked to other competitors from different schools and ate food from the vending machines and Starbucks. While I was competing, I saw so many incredible garments. One girl made a wedding dress, another made a beautiful velvet prom dress. They were breathtaking. After I competed, I saw some of the cakes and one was absolutely extraordinary! It was awesome, to say the least,” said Gonzales.
This competition was one of many more to come, if they advance.
“If you perform well at regionals, this past competition, you get to go to the state level competition which is in Springfield,” said FCCLA member Zoe Jacquat.
There are three different placements which are gold, bronze, or silver. At this past competition, they received no golds, but a few silver and bronze medals.
“These competitions are super laid back and fun to compete in,” said Gonzalez. “I would recommend it for anyone who wants to try something new or who is interested in fashion design, baking, interior design, child development, and more. It’s also a nice way to meet people from different schools who have the same interests as you. In addition, we have an annual State Competition which is an overnight trip. Last year, we stayed in a nice hotel with a pool and ordered tons of pizza.”
FCCLA’s next competition is state, which will take place on April 7th to the 8th.
