Anyone who has gone to the library at Riverside Brookfield High School and has had the chance to meet Jennifer Shaker knows how supportive she is. Unfortunately, her time at RB is to be cut short after a sudden hiring across the country.
During Shaker’s six years at RB, she has had many key moments that have made her time here memorable. Above all else, being able to support students has made her feel special.
“I would say [my] favorite milestone was the first time that I felt like I was considered a trusted adult by a student,” Shaker said. “That is why I wanted to work in a school.”
Shaker enjoyed her time working in the library because it gave her a unique opportunity to connect with students and learn about their interests, both academically and otherwise.
“Another thing was realizing that it was ok to connect with students on music and sports. Yes, we’re in a library, but it’s not just about books,” Shaker said. “That’s been a cool thing because you get to see different parts of people.”
Looking forward, Shaker will be traveling to Lake Oswego, Oregon to be with her family. There, she will be working at Lake Oswego High School, which is within the best school district in the state.
“It was a spur of the moment interview,” Shaker said. “It’s the middle of the school year. Not many schools are trying to fill positions [at this time].”
While the move is sudden, it is not a permanent change as Shaker plans on returning to RB after both her children graduate high school. She also plans on visiting for prom.
“My plan is to be out in Oregon until my son graduates [high school],” Shaker said. “But this is temporary, Chicago is always gonna be my home.”
Shaker hopes that students keep her in their thoughts and keep her up to date with their life.
“I want to know that you’re succeeding in whatever that you’re doing, and if there is something that I can do to help then let me do that,” Shaker said.
Shaker also hopes that she was able to help students see the value in themselves, and that students know that she will always be there for them even if she is not in the building.
“This isn’t goodbye, I’ll be back. This is temporary,” Shaker said. “It’s a see you later.”
I would like to personally thank you, Mrs. Shaker, for what you have done. Coming into sophomore year with the uncertainty of COVID-19, you were so welcoming and willing to get to know me. Because of that warmness, I was able to feel comfortable within a school that seemed so scary. Not only that, but you have created a safe space within the library that will live on for years to come. I also want to thank you for being such a supportive person. Your kindness has touched each and every person within the school, and you will forever be remembered. I hope that your journey to Oregon goes well, and remember, don’t be afraid to come home.
