Halloween 101

Emily Ryan, Caylee Kirk, and

With Halloween coming soon there isn’t much time left to do tons of spooky things. But there are lots of last minute Halloween themed activities to do that are perfect to put you in a spooky mood.

The first is watching horror/scary movies. They are classic and they do not take a lot of your time or money. Here are some basics that would make you jump out of your seat:

  • Coraline
  • Hocus Pocus
  • The Lost Boys
  • Freddy vs Jason
  • Casper
  • Halloween Town
  • Nightmare on Elm Street
  • Halloween
  • Friday the 13th
  • It’s The Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown
  • Gremlins

Movies are super easy. Just grab your friends, make some popcorn and get comfy to watch a movie on a cold October night.

And if you’re interested, here are some new films coming out this month:

  • Halloween – Oct. 19
  • Suspiria – Oct. 26
  • Killer Kate – Oct. 26

“My favorite thing to do during Halloween is to watch the movie Halloween and my all time favorite candy would be Kit Kats,” said sophomore Gloria Alcaraz.

But with every Halloween everyone looks forward to getting free candy, and by now we know which house to go to for the full size candy bars.

Here we present our favorite candies as well as the ultimate classic candies:

  • Candy Corn
  • Skittles
  • M&M’s
  • Snickers
  • Reese’s
  • Starbursts
  • Hot Tamales

But you can’t forget the scares this year. Get some friends and be ready to have your skin crawl  from haunted houses that will definitely give you nightmares. With haunted houses, most of them are worth your money if you love being scared. Going with your friends will always be a night filled with new memories and a bunch of screams.

Here are our favorite scary sites that you must see:

  • House of Torment Haunted Houses Chicago – Rated 4.2/5
  • Midnight Terror #1 MUST see – Rated 4.2/5
  • Statesville Haunted Prison  – Rated 4.3/5
  • Basement of the Dead Haunted House – Rated 4.6/5
  • Dead Rising Haunted House – Rated 4.5/5
  • Six Flags great america Fright Fest – Rated 4.4/5

“I love going to the pumpkin patch Sunny Acker’s, Haunted house 13th floor, and my favorite Halloween treat is candy corn,” said sophomore Sarah Silva.

Halloween is so much fun, even more so when you do things with your friends. These aren’t hard to do and are not super expensive either. These are so much fun to do.  Plus, while you are doing these activities, you will certainly be able to take some instagramable pictures. They include:

  • Carving a pumpkin
  • Playing in the leaves
  • Having a Halloween party
  • Making spooky treats
  • Going to a pumpkin patch / corn maze
  • Hay rides
  • Boo in the Zoo: Boo in the Zoo is super easy since we aren’t far from the zoo it’s only $20.95
  • Monsters on Main street (in downtown Brookfield): This costs almost nothing. You just need a costume, and can then go to the stores around Brookfield and get candy.
  • Apple picking: Even after you go apple picking you can make your apples into caramel or candied apples.

There is just so much to do before Halloween.  You should even plan for the day of Halloween.

There seems to be lots of talk about how high school students shouldn’t dress up and still trick or treat because we are “too old” for those types of things. But students still seem to be interested in the spooky season.

There even seems to be a good amount of people that plan on going trick or treating this year.

“I do, I love it. I am never gonna stop,” said sophomore Bella Mocnik.

There are students who already know what they want to be this year.

“I was thinking about being another vampire, but I don’t know maybe I’ll just put a sheet over me and cut some eyes out and do a classic ghost as a joke,” said Junior Zach Trelenberg.

It could be tough to find a Halloween costume. You might ask yourself: Is it even worth it? Am I too old? Will I look stupid?

Maybe we can help you choose the right one with this list of classic Halloween costumes:

  • Old Witch
  • Classic Ghost Sheet
  • Scarecrow
  • Scary Clown
  • Skeleton
  • Zombie
  • Angel
  • Cowboy

We hope that all of these ideas help you and your friends have a spooky Halloween. Have a fun filled October with lots of tricks and lots of treats!
