The annual Riverside-Brookfield Powder-Puff game took place on Wednesday, September 2010. All the girls played their hearts out and it was a night of great competition. The game is played every year in rally of the Spirit Week at the Shuey Stadium. This year’s officials were teachers Blair Jensen, John Beasley, and Cara Gallagher.
Competition began with the matchup of juniors vs. freshmen. The juniors proved to be a championship contending team beating the freshmen 35-7. The juniors were led by quarterback Kiley Rusen and tailback Tierney Duffy. This game was the highest scoring game recorded in Powder-Puff football history.
The second game was seniors against the sophomores; a rematch from the previous year. The sophomores came into the game playing hard, but not hard enough. The seniors would end up shutting out the sophomores 21-0. This game displayed the skill of the seniors showing a strong defense lead by senior Amanda Biro. Biro was making tackles and batting down any ball that was thrown up by the opposing quarterback.
With a senior win against the sophomores the upper classmen faced each other in a classic senior vs. junior game. The championship game proved to be an even matchup between seniors and juniors. The juniors were hot coming off a huge win against the freshmen.
With the first possession, juniors capitalized with early scoring on a run play to Duffy. The seniors would answer back with a touchdown run by Jacki Grisafe. Grisafe said, “I wasn’t leaving the field unless we beat the juniors,” at the end of the half it was a tied game 7-7.
In the second half the seniors had first possession and would score on their first drive of the half. Kate Walsh would run the ball in for 7. The seniors would then take the lead and hold it. The seniors finally prevailed in winning after their second year in the championship.
